This Tax Organizer is your go-to checklist to help you gather all the documents and information needed to accurately complete your tax return and stay fully compliant with IRS and state tax rules.
Here’s what you should have on hand:
Income Documents
- W-2 Forms from all employers
- 1099 Forms for:
- Interest and dividends
- Stock sales or investments
- Retirement distributions and IRA withdrawals
- Unemployment benefits
- Self-employment income or freelance work
- Social Security income
- Gambling winnings, prizes, or awards
- Any other miscellaneous income
- K-1 Forms from partnerships, S-corps, trusts, or estates
- Alimony received (include amount, payer’s name & Social Security Number)
- Income earned by dependents (if applicable)
Expense & Deduction Info
- Mortgage interest statements (Form 1098), including points and insurance
- Student loan interest and tuition payments (Form 1098-T)
- Childcare expenses: Provide a statement from the provider with name, address, Tax ID, and total amount paid
- Medical and dental expenses (if significant)
- Charitable donations:
- Receipts for all donations (cash and non-cash)
- For donations over $250, a letter from the charity is required
- If you donated a vehicle, include Form 1098-C
- Non-cash gifts over $5,000 need a qualified appraisal
- Receipts for energy-efficient home improvements (to qualify for tax credits)
- Mileage logs for any charitable driving
Property Transactions
- Documents for home purchases, sales, or refinancing (HUD-1 or closing disclosure)
- Records for property sales, stock or crypto sales – include:
- Purchase date and cost
- Sale date and sale price
Other Useful Info
- Any IRS, state, or local tax agency notices or letters received during the year
- Foreign account or investment disclosures, if applicable
- Amount of any jury duty pay, hobby income, or cash prizes
- Amount of alimony paid (include recipient’s name and SSN)
- Bank interest earned for which you did not receive a 1099
- Details of any theft or casualty losses
- Total value of online or catalog purchases where sales tax wasn’t charged (may apply in some states)
- Records for any education savings accounts (529 plans, ESA) or cashed savings bonds
